چکیده

We consider the problem of separating two sets of points in an Euclidean space with a hyperplane that minimizes the sum of p-norm distances to the plane of points lying on the “wrong” side of the plane. A Variable Neighborhood Search metaheuristic framework is used to determine the plane coefficients. For a set of examples with L1-norm, L2-norm and L∞-norm, for which the exact solution can be computed, we show that our algorithm finds it in most cases, and gets good approximations in the others. The use of our heuristic solutions for problems in these norms can dramatically accelerate exact algorithms. Our method can be applied on very large instances that are intractable by exact algorithms. Since the proposed approach works for truly arbitrary norms (other than the traditional 1,2 and∞), we can explore for the first time the effects of the choice of p on the generalization properties of p-norm hyperplane separation.

Investigating Zone Pricing in a Location-Routing Problem Using a Variable Neighborhood Search Algorithm

In this paper, we assume a firm tries to determine the optimal price, vehicle route and location of the depot in each zone to maximise its profit. Therefore, in this paper zone pricing is studied which contributes to the literature of location-routing problems (LRP). Zone pricing is one of the most important pricing policies that are prevalently used by many companies. The proposed problem is v...

Composing counterpoint musical scores with variable neighborhood search

In this research a variable neighborhood search (VNS) algorithm is developed that can generate musical fragments of arbitrary length. The objective function of the algorithm is based on a quantification of existing fifth species counterpoint rules. A thorough parametric analysis of the VNS reveals the significance of the algorithm’s parameters on the quality of the composed fragment, as well as...

Combining intensification and diversification strategies in VNS. An application to the Vertex Separation problem

The Vertex Separation problem (VSP) is an NP-hard problem with practical applications in VLSI design, graph drawing and computer language compiler design. VSP belongs to a family of optimization problems in which the objective is to find the best separator of vertices or edges in a generic graph. In this paper, we propose different heuristic methods and embed them into a Variable Neighborhood S...

Modeling and scheduling no-idle hybrid flow shop problems

Although several papers have studied no-idle scheduling problems, they all focus on flow shops, assuming one processor at each working stage. But, companies commonly extend to hybrid flow shops by duplicating machines in parallel in stages. This paper considers the problem of scheduling no-idle hybrid flow shops. A mixed integer linear programming model is first developed to mathematically form...

An experimental comparison of Variable Neighborhood Search variants for the minimization of the vertex-cut in layout problems

Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) is a metaheuristic for solving optimization problems based on a systematic change of neighborhoods. In recent years, a large variety of VNS strategies have been proposed. However, we have only found limited experimental comparisons among different VNS variants. This paper reviews three VNS strategies for finding near-optimal solutions for vertex-cut minimizati...
